A meeting by ‘The Committee Against the Destruction of our Environment’ was convened to address the Industrial Zone of Thisvi. About 100 people were in attendance. The meeting was informative, emotional, and frustrating all at once

The committee, led by Dimitrios Mixalis, began with statements by each of the members on the board. Each member delivered a statement outlining subjects such as: the environmental effects of the new industrial zone, the effects on the villages, and the political stagnation that has been realized in the Municipality of Thisvi.

Many great points came out of the meeting. All who presented did so with passion, and fortified their points with empirical information based not on personal gain, but mined from their own scientific backgrounds. The committee is made up of scientists, not politicians.

It is also significant to point out that the Chemical Engineer Mr. Panteloglou returned to deliver yet another impassioned speech warning the villagers of the impending environmental catastrophe. His tirade against political maneuvering and imminent danger rattled the crowd, and the entire village.

Present at the discussion was the Mayor of the Municipality, Konstantinos Kobanis. Most of the attacking statements of the night were directed against him. He was offered the microphone to defend his administration’s actions. The mayor began by stating that the current situation the village has found itself in is a direct result of previous mayors’ negligence. He managed to refute many of the committee’s comments in his own way. Most of his answers were aimed at deflecting blame from himself. The microphone was left open for questions from the public, and it was clear that most villagers did not believe the mayor’s statements.

Several people in the audience began to deliver comments that ranged from direct personal attacks on the mayor, to well-spoken and thoughtfully engaging commentary on the future of our villages. One thing is clear - people are not buying the political games the mayor is delivering to them any longer. The reaction of the crowd to the mayor made this very obvious.

Θα μάθατε ίσως για την κινητοποίηση στο λιμάνι της Aντίκυρας που έγινε στις 14 Iουλίου. Ήταν πολύ επιτυχημένη γιατί συμμετείχε αρκετός κόσμος από απέναντι από τον Kορινθιακό (είχαν μάλιστα ναυλώσει και ένα πλοίο που έπιασε Aντίκυρα) και πήγαμε με πορεία μέχρι το συγκρότημα εργοστασίων του Mυτιληναίου. Yπήρχε σχετικά μικρή προσέλευση και από τα δικά μας μέρη. Έγινε μια αρκετά καλή συζήτηση επίσης στο Σαράντι και σκοπεύουμε να κάνουμε άλλη μία στη Δομβραίνα το ερχόμενο Σάββατο. Έχουμε ωστόσο την ιδέα να κάνουμε κάτι πιο φιλόδοφο για το τέλος περίπου του Aυγούστου. Προφανώς γνωρίζετε ότι το λιμάνι στο Bαθύ είναι στα όρια της νομιμότητας. Στην πραγματικότητα, όπως πρόσφατα πληροφορηθήκαμε, το υπουργείο Oικονομικών απέρριψε αίτηση της εταιρείας που διαχειρίζεται τη BIΠE και ψευδώς ισχυρίζεται ότι είναι και φορέας διαχείρισης του λιμανιού για νομιμοποίηση των εγκαταστάσεων. Aυτό αφορά τόσο τις παλιές (της ETBA) όσο και τις κατοπινές που έκανε η ίδια η ΔIABIΠEΘIB. Eπίσης, σύμφωνα με το υπουργείο, ο αιγιαλός και η παραλία είναι κοινόχρηστοι χώροι των οποίων την κυριότητα και προστασία έχει το Δημόσιο. Aυτό σημαίνει ότι οι βιομήχανοι αυθαίρετα απαγορεύουν την πρόσβαση και βάζουν …ωράρια εισόδου και εξόδου. M’ άλλα λόγια λειτουργούν εντελώς φεουδαρχικά ποντάροντας φυσικά στην άγνοια και το φόβο των ντόπιων (ή ακόμα και στην αδιαφορία τους). Φυσικά, σκανδαλώδης είναι η ίδια η λειτουργία του λιμανιού και η απειλή που αποτελεί για τον Kορινθιακό συνολικά.

Kάποιοι από μας σκεφτήκαμε λοιπόν να κάνουμε μια κινητοποίηση-εκδήλωση στον ίδιο αυτό χώρο που διεκδικούμε και που οι βιομήχανοι βιάζουν συστηματικά (με σχέδια μάλιστα επέκτασής του). Παράλληλα, εκκρεμεί και απόφαση του Kεντρικού Aρχαιολογικού Συμβουλίου σχετικά με τη γειτνίαση με τον αρχαιολογικό χώρο. Λέμε λοιπόν στο μέρος αυτό που αποτελεί σημείο αιχμής για μας να διοργανώσουμε μια συναυλία ή πάρτυ με μεγάλη προσέλευση κόσμου, κάτι που απαιτεί καλή βέβαια προετοιμασία, και έχει βέβαια και το ρίσκο του. Aπευθύνομαι σε σας, με όλο το θάρρος, για οικονομική ενίσχυση που τυχόν χρειαστούμε για τα έξοδα της κινητοποίησης. Δε γνωρίζω ακόμα το κόστος (θα το μάθω σύντομα) και φυσικά εννοώ να απευθυνθείτε σε όσους συμπατριώτες μπορούν να ανταποκριθούν. Ίσως και να μη χρειαστεί και να το καλύψουμε εμείς με τη βοήθεια και άλλων από τη Bοιωτία.

Σε κάθε περίπτωση, ό,τι ενέργειες μπορείτε να κάνετε, κάντε τις με σχετική διακριτικότητα σε πρόσωπα έμπιστα, γιατί δεν είναι ακόμα ανακοινωμένο, για προφανείς λόγους.

We at Elikona.com wanted to again thank you for joining our site, and embracing our cause. We originally set out to reunite the people of our villages abroad and in Greece, and hopefully, we have at least moved in the right direction.

Summer is upon us, and that means that many of you will be visiting Greece soon. You most likely will be bathing in the crystal blue waters of the Korinthian Gulf. You will also most likely enjoy some fresh local food such as fish, feta, olives, and meat. We all grew up remembering how wonderful and rich each of these experiences was. Now, imagine wading through garbage and debris at St. Nicholas beach. Imagine sitting down to an afternoon lunch, eating local products poisoned with noxious chemicals that number in the thousands. This is the fate that faces our lands today - one that is imposed on this area by men who were not born there, and do not value it like we do.

We must fight this together. If you only help out with one thing in this fight, than let that task be spreading the website to people that you know from our villages (fathers, mothers, grandparents, brothers, cousins, friends). If they do not know how to use a computer… Help Them!!! This must reach the largest audience possible. Please, we urge you to spread the word about Elikona.com, it is our War Cry.

Please stay posted, we have nearly fifteen new documents that will be posted in the next week concerning the industrial zone situation, both in Greek, and translated to English. Keep at it in the forums, we had a great start, we would love to see it continue. And do keep in touch. Our formal Petition will soon be posted to this website.

Η επιτροπή (Νέας Υερσέης και Νέας Υόρκης) αγώνα προστασίας περιβάλλοντος της περιοχής Δήμου Θίσβης και Νοτίου Βοιωτίας, με πρωτοβουλία του συμπατριώτη Γ. Α. Τασιγιάννη και του Επαμ. Καραμπογιά, εκάλεσε τους λοιπούς συμπατριώτες να συγκεντρωθούν στην αίθουσα της εκκλησίας στην πόλη Fairview, NJ. .

Ο αριθμός των παρόντων έφτασε περίπου σε εκατό άτομα.

Η κυρία Πόλυ Τασιγιάννη, έκανε την εισαγωγή τονίζοντας την σπουδαιότητα της συνεδρίασης.

Έγινε προβολή της ταινίας ΘΙΣΒΗ: ΟΡΑ ΜΗΔΕΝ με θέμα - πως να σώσουμε το περιβάλλον και να προλάβουμε την ανεπανόρθωτη καταστροφή.

Οι κύριοι ομιλητές στην ταινία ήταν ο κύριος Δημήτρης Μιχάλης, η Ιατρός Βάσω Λυμπερίου - Μικροβιολόγος, και ο κος. Α. Παντελόγλου - Χημικός Μηχανικός. Όλοι περιέγραψαν τη σημερινή κατάσταση. Ο κος Παντελόγλου αναφέρθηκε στην οικολογική καταστροφή των Οινοφύτων και μας προειδοποίησε τι κακό μας περιμένει, αν φυτρώσουν και άλλα εργοστάσια στην περιοχή μας και δεν ενεργήσουμε εγκαίρως να τους σταματήσουμε.

Εν συνεχεία μίλησε ο κος. Επαμ. Καραμπογιάς τονίζοντας το μέγεθος της καταστροφής.

Ο Επαμεινώντας εργάστηκε σε εργοστάσιο στο Ντιτρόητ, αλλά απο την μόλυνση έπαθαν τα πνευμόνια του και τις νύχτες αναγκάζεται να φοράει μάσκα για να μπορέσει να κοιμηθεί.

Η παρουσίασή του ήταν παραστατική, μας έδωσε μία ζωντανή εικόνα για κάτι που μπορεί να συμβεί σε όλους μας.

Τελικά, μίλησε ο κος. Γ. Α. Τασιγιάννης, οποίος μαζί με τις εντυπωσιακές αφίσσες στην αίθουσα, περιέγραψε το μέγεθος του περιβαλλοντικού εγκλήματος.

Με όσα ανέφεραν οι ομιλητές, ήσαν αρκετά να μας πείσουν ότι το πρόβλημα είναι σοβαρό και οφείλουμε όλοι να λάβουμε ενεργό μέρος.

Αρκετοί εξέφρασαν την γνώμη τους, έδωσαν χρήσιμες ιδέες και γράφτηκαν μέλη της επιτροπής.

Αυτή ήταν η πρώτη μας συνάντηση, τα πρώτα μας βήματα. Οι νέοι, με πρωτοβουλία του Πήτ Δέδε, υιός του Παναγιώτη Δέδε, ανέλαβαν να δημιουργήσουν σελίδα στο Διαδύκτιο για ταχύτερη επικοινωνία μεταξύ μας.

Οι παρόντες, έδειξαν μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον και ομόθυμα εναντιώθηκαν στην περιβαλλοντική καταστροφή του τόπου μας.

Ευχαριστήσουμε τον Αιδεσιμότατο Ιερέα Παπαχρήστο για την συνεργασία του,

τις κυρίες που εργάστηκαν στην κουζίνα για να μας σερβίρουν, τις Δεσποινίδες Γεωργία και Μαρία Γ. Τασιγιάννη που βιντεοσκόπησαν την Συνεδρίαση και βοήθησαν με τις αφίσσες.

Επίσης ευχαριστούμε τους συμπατριώτες και συμπατριώτισσες που ήρθαν από μακρυά, Νέα Υόρκη, τον κ. Δημήτρη Ρογκάκη, από την Φλώριδα, τον κ. Αλέκο Αθανάσαινα με την οικογένειά του από το Μίσιγκαν, τον κον. Επαμ. Καραμπογιά από το Toledo, Ohio..

The Committee (New Jersey and New York) established to fight for environmental protection in the Municipality of Thisvi and the southern Region of Viotia (Boeotia), on the initiative of compatriot G. A. Tasigianni and Epam. Karampogia, invited any other compatriots to gather in the church hall in the city of Fairview, NJ. .

A screening of the film “THISVI: ZERO HOUR” begins, concerning the subject; how to save the environment and to prevent irreparable damage.

The main speakers during the film were Mr. Dimitris Michael, Dr. Vasso Lymperiou - Microbiologist, and Mr. A. Panteloglou - Chemical Engineer. All have described the current situation. Mr. Panteloglou referred to the ecological destruction of Oinofyta and has warned the citizens of Thisvi what disasters await them if other factories in our region take hold and if the citizens do not act in time to stop them. The film then concludes.

Subsequently. Epam. Karabogias took the floor and began stressing the magnitude of the disaster.

Epameinontas worked in a factory in Detroit, Michigan, USA, and has suffered severe trauma and infection of the lungs as a result of this. During nighttime, he is forced to wear an oxygen breathing mask and pump to be able to go to sleep.

His presentation was analogous, as he presented to us a vivid picture of something that can happen to all who live in the vicinity of the factory. To stress this point, he showed the attendants the breathing apparatus he uses, which occupies a large backpack. The mask he must wear is strapped on over the nose and mouth, and must be fastened around the back of his head.

Finally, Mr. G. A. Tasigiannis, who presented impressive and moving posters in the hall, described the magnitude of the environmental crime that is being perpetuated secretively in Thisvi.

With what was said by the speakers and through the video presentation, there was enough evidence to convince the congregation that the problem is serious and we should all take an active part.

Several expressed their opinions, and provided useful ideas to each other and the committee members.

This was our first meeting, and our first steps. Young people took the initiative in formulating ideas. The task of creating a website was undertaken by Peter Dedes, son of Panagiotis Dedes, in order to facilitate faster communication between us.
Those in attendance showed great interest and voiced their objection to an environmental disaster in our lands.
